Tha wod bon hose

“Tha wod bon hose,

O Tha wod bon hose,

how I luve

Tha wod bon hose!”

- Poim bye zavi :D

(btw I now ho to spel) ;)

A few days ago we went to the Woodburn house in Pendleton, Alabama. It is 200 years old and has lots of very old artefacts inside. The people who lived in it, did not live there all the time, but it was their holiday home where they went for their summer vacation.

When they first built the house they had over 1000 acres of land. The house was built by enslaved people. But now the current owners only have 11 acres. Surprisingly, the original owners were nice to the people who worked there. How the people got all their money to build the house was by selling indigo which is pretty much just blue dye from a plant.

Replica of a slave cabin on the property

I thought it was funny that in the very first room we went into there was a waffle maker but it was in the shape of hearts! The guide, John, told us that under the house there was 22 thousand gallons of water used for drinking, cooking and washing.

Jostling board on the porch

When we went outside on the porch, there was a “jostling board” which is like a very long wooden surfboard. It is used like a very long see-saw that you can bounce up and down like a trampoline that you sit on. It was for the kids playing and when the mothers had an upset tummy because it made you burp easier after eating food.

Four storeys

The Woodburn house was the only tourist house that opened up its attic for people to see. The three oldest artefacts in the whole house was two tables from the year 1770 and a candle from 1790. The guide told us that there was only one closet in the whole house, even though it was four storeys. The reason there was only one closet was because each closet was counted as one room, and the government would charge more taxes based on the more rooms that you have.

When we were walking around, the guide said you will see stars around the door frames and window frames. This is because in Greek mythology if you stand under a star you get good luck. The people in the house did not have any toilets, they only had chamber pots. This is just like a big pot that you do your business in.

Bed with ropes

Have you heard of the phrase “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”? It is because a long time ago, instead of having wooden pole things under the bed, they would have ropes. So every night the enslaved people would tighten the ropes so that the bed wouldn’t fall to the ground where the bugs would be. So sleep tight, with the ropes tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite you on the ground.

I’m going to go to sleep now. Good night, sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite!
