Frankfurt Foods

In the Old Town with a German Pretzel

We arrived on the plane on Tuesday. The day we travelled it was my birthday. It was an 8 hour flight. We got here at 8am and we slept for a few hours in the hotel because there was a big time difference so we were all really tired.

After we woke up, we were really hungry since we skipped lunch, so we looked around for food. I saw an Indian restaurant and we went there. The waitress was really nice. She told us about the three different grocery stores, Tee Gud, Rewe and Lidl. There was a cheap one and a really expensive one. The food in the restaurant was really good because there was naan. Surprisingly there was chocolate pudding. I had never had that at an Indian restaurant.

We also went to a really nice Persian restaurant called "Babam". We got Kebab Koobideh which is one of my favourite meals with minced meat. You eat it with tomato and yogurt with basmati rice because that's the type of rice Persians eat. There are lots of different cultural foods in Frankfurt because there are people from all over the world here.

The next few days we had some other foods. We had three types of sausages. One was currywurst (which we had on fries) which I didn't mind. It tasted like ketchup with curry powder. The other two were beef and pork which were served with bread and mustard. I don't like mustard so I didn't try it but my parents said it was good.

I'm not sure how many times we got pretzels but there were lots of times. Pretzels are sold pretty much everywhere, at bakeries, on the street, in grocery stores (most of them have a big bakery built in), and some shops. My favourite pretzel was when we went to the Old Town square again and there was a guy with a cart. He had three types: cheese, normal, and chocolate covered. I really liked those.

Once for breakfast, we went to the grocery store bakery and I got a croissant with bacon inside. I had never had a bacon croissant before and it was really good.

We also tried Potato Pancakes (German Kartoffelpuffer) which were a bit cold because we were at a market but I liked the taste. It was served with Grüne Soße (Green Sauce). It tasted like sour cream and herbs.

We tried apple juice which tasted a bit like pear so I didn't like it that much. There were lots of beer and wines made with apple too.

We also had Apple Cake (Apfelkuchen) which I liked and donuts which had jam inside. We weren't sure what one of the jam types was because the label was in German but I didn't eat it because I don't like jam usually. Both of the desserts weren't that sweet. My mom said she was expecting them to be way sweeter but they were really good not being too sweet like in the USA.

One of my favourite days was when we went to meet my mom's friend Katrin and we went to a castle. Katrin gave us a big bag of snacks for when we were on the train back. I really liked the chocolate pretzel mix with nuts. Normally I don't like nuts but I liked all the nuts in that package.

We had a traditional German breakfast which had bread, cheese, jams, butter, boiled eggs, juice, fruit, and tomato with mozzarella cheese.

The German dinner was mostly the same but didn't have eggs. Instead it had some meat that you ate with onions on bread. We also picked wild garlic leaves which were chopped up and mixed with butter to make a spread.

Other things I noticed about Frankfurt: there are lots of people smoking, lots of people riding bikes, and everything is in German. Hahahaha!
