Frankfurt on Foot walking tour

We decided the easiest way to get familiar with the new cities we are visiting would be to take walking tours. So on our first full day in Frankfurt, we did a 4 hour walking tour. I wasn't sure how the kids would go because it's quite a long time to be walking around, but they did great. Here were some of the highlights of the walk for me:

Learning about Stumble Stones (Stolper Steine) which mark the living places of people killed during the Holocaust

St Bartholomew Cathedral, best known to us because it was the place Heidi climbed up to try to see Switzerland.

A model of the city of Frankfurt at the City Planning Office... beautiful to see all the green spaces!

Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall listing the 12,000 Frankfurt Jewish Citizens killed during the Holocaust.

Jewish Ghetto Wall and stones from the roads in the ghetto.

We had a half hour break at the Klein Markt Halle market for lunch.

Beautiful wall painting showing the life of Jesus from the 1500s in the Karmeliter Kloster (right above the public toilets haha)

New Alt Stadt and the Alte Nikolai Church, a Gothic church built in the late 1200's.

Site of the Nazi book burning.

The walk really helped us get familiar with the city, and a few days later when we had some extra time we decided to go back to the old town area.

We enjoyed looking around the shops...

And trying some traditional desserts including the Frankfurt Crown Cake.

Altogether the experience confirmed my prediction that a walking tour would be a good addition to our itinerary, and I loved learning about Frankfurt!
