French food and calamello cheese

In Versailles, we went to our French relative's house for a five course meal.

They lived in an apartment, a pretty fancy apartment with a big red door. Usually we don't see red doors, just normal wood doors. The apartment had a big chandalier with crystals hanging down from it.

Our relatives definitely had a different accent. They were from France. They were very nice and must have spent a lot of time baking the meal for us.

We started off at the little coffee table where we sat down and ate chips. What I noticed in France was that when one person picks something up from the bowl, they pick the bowl up and walk it around to everyone. There was 3 different types of chips. One was a crunchy twisted bread pretzel thingee, the other one was a long cheesy not-twisted bread, and the last chip was a normal chip. We has some juice. there was also wine but we didn't drink it. Because firstly kids don't usually drink wine, and secondly my parents don't drink wine.

Then the second course was the real meal which was chicken, potatoes, water and bread. We moved into the main dining room area.

In France cheese is it's own meal. So after the main meal was the third course, which was the cheese meal. There were three types of cheese. Goat cheese, "holey cheese with holes in it" (Emmental cheese) and then there was "calamello cheese" (camembert cheese).

The fourth course of the meal was dessert. There was a pear cake and we did not know what the other cake was. It was another fruit cake but no one knew the english name of the fruit! But it still tasted good. I don't know which one was my favourite cake, they were both really good.

After the main meal and dessert we moved back into the coffee room area for the fifth and final course of the meal. We had tea. We had little sugar cubes that we put in the tea. Sometimes people put the sugar cubes in their mouth first then took a sip of tea.

I asked mum if I could eat one, and then she said sure, and then I ate one. Then I asked the lady for the toilet, and she explained how her mum grew up using another type of toilet called a chamber pot toilet. It is disguised like a drawer, and when you lift it up there is a little bucket and you can go toilet. Then we said good bye.

I really enjoyed the meal because it made me less hungry.
