Two Famous Foods in Belgium

The four things that Brussels is famous for is beer, chocolate, fries, and waffles. We were going to try all of them but we didn’t get to try chocolate (except on the waffles we got melted chocolate) and we don’t want to try beer because our family doesn’t drink alcohol. 

We got waffles twice in the same day! The first waffle was a strawberry chocolate waffle. It was really good. We ate it on our walking tour for our breakfast. We were at the oldest building in Brussels. It was called the Grand Palace. 

The building was not symmetrical. One side had a type of window which had a three leaf clover on it and it was round at the bottom. The other side had a three leaf clover on it but we didn’t see the bottom, it was connected to the metal bar. The bottom window was sort of rectangularish and it had metal bars going up then connected to the down bit. So it wasn’t symmetrical. If you look all the way to the top and follow all the day down, the door was off centered. It was not symmetrical because there were three architects and it was built in three different time periods. 

Then we got fries. They were really good fries. They were thicker than normal. They didn’t just have salt on them. They were double cooked in beef tallow which is fat. The sauces were really good. I especially liked the white sauce. There was a red one but it was a teensy bit spicy. Can you believe that fries are actually potatoes? Because I can’t! 

After that, we looked at a peeing statue which sounds really weird when you say it out loud. They put a peeing statue up because of a story. It wasn’t true though. The story was that the enemies of Brussels had a long line of gun powder and a big patch of explosives in the middle of town. Then a little boy needed to go to the toilet and he didn’t actually mean to but he peed on the explosives. So when they wanted it to blow up, it didn’t because it was all wet. The statue is called the Mennekin Pis.

That’s near where we got the second waffles. They were really, really good. It was the same as the other waffles but with whipped cream and the chocolate sauce was actually melted chocolate. 

After that we went to play soccer with our cousins. I was the goalie with my mom and auntie. I saved the goal and my tooth because when the ball was coming at me, I put my arms up to block my face. 

After that we climbed up and went up an escalator in the Atomium. It was really dark and there were lights which were mostly blue and red. There was a mirror maze where there were lots of mirrors with lights around the edges. There were lots of balls and we went in a few of them but not all of them. We got to see a view from the top. Then we waited in the long line of people to go down to the ground.

Then when we got down, we got icecream. I got a smurf flavoured scoop and a strawberry. The smurfs were made in Belgium, and Tin Tin.
